You Once Looked at Me Like I Was a Secret the Universe Had Been Waiting To Tell You

A hopeful, poetic reflection on the kind of love that makes you feel deeply seen, as if your heart has been recognized before you ever had to explain it. It’s about still believing in magic after heartbreak, and learning that the right love won’t ask you to disappear, it will gently bring you home to yourself.

You once looked at me like I was a secret the universe had been waiting to tell you.

Like somewhere, long before we ever stood in the same room, the stars had folded my name into their sleeves and waited for the right night to hand it over.

I remember that look. I probably remember it more than I should.

There are certain moments that stay in the body long after the story changes. A glance across a room. A hand brushing yours for half a second too long. The quiet pause before someone says your name like they’ve been practicing it in another lifetime.

Love has a strange kind of magic to it. It can make an ordinary Tuesday feel like it was written in gold ink. It can turn a kitchen light into a spotlight, a car ride into a confession, a simple “you okay?” into something your heart keeps replaying when the house gets too quiet. And maybe that’s why I still believe in it.

Even after all the ways life has tried to talk me out of being soft. Even after the endings.

Even after the mornings when I had to gather myself from the floor, fix my face, make breakfast, answer messages, find clean socks, and keep moving like my heart wasn’t walking around with a bruise under its coat.

I still believe there are people who see us before we know how to explain ourselves.

They don’t need the polished version. They don’t ask us to shrink the strange parts, the tender parts, the too-much parts, the parts that learned how to survive before they learned how to rest. They look at us and something in them goes quiet.

Recognition.

That’s the word I keep coming back to. The kind of love I believe in now feels less like being chased and more like being known. It feels like someone noticing the little things: how your voice changes when you’re tired, how you get quiet when you’re hurt, how you can be brave all day and still need someone to sit beside you when the lights go low. It feels like safety without boredom.

Spark without chaos. A soft place with a door that locks from the inside. I think we spend so much of our lives trying to become easy to love. Easier to understand. Easier to keep. Easier to choose. Then one day, maybe after enough heartbreak has sanded the performance off of us, we realize the right love won’t need us watered down.

The right love will look at us with wonder, even on the days we feel like a half-finished sentence. Especially then. Because there is a kind of magic that only finds you after you stop begging for ordinary things to feel sacred. You start noticing the moon again. The way sunlight slips across your bed in the morning. The way your own laugh sounds when it finally comes back from wherever grief sent it. The way hope, stubborn little thing, keeps showing up with its hair a mess and its hands full of flowers. And you begin to understand.

Maybe love was never supposed to make you disappear into someone else’s life. Maybe love was supposed to help you come home to your own.

So, I hope someone looks at you that way. Like you are a secret they’re lucky enough to hear.

Like your softness is safe with them. Like your heart, with all its old weather and wild little prayers, is something they want to learn slowly.

And until they do, I hope you keep looking at yourself with that kind of awe.

Because you are still magic.

Even here.

Even now.

Even after everything that tried to make you forget.

with love, just jessica
